Los Angeles, CA (May 20, 2026)—Varèse Sarabande and Craft Recordings announce the latest offerings from the popular CD Club series: deluxe editions of the celebrated film scores for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and Timecop. Arriving July 10 and available to pre-order/pre-save today, both titles will be released as CD Club editions featuring exclusive liner notes and newly expanded music, with the expanded albums also available digitally.
The CD Club release of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water offers a new interview with composer John Debney discussing the creation of the film’s energetic and eccentric score, along with never-before-released musical cues. Meanwhile, Timecop features interviews with composer Mark Isham and director Peter Hyams, plus newly unearthed cues from the beloved Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi thriller.
Originally launched in 1989 and revived in 2001, the Varèse Sarabande CD Club was created to give soundtrack collectors access to rare, out-of-print, and long-requested film scores that might not otherwise receive a commercial release. Over the years, the series has become a cornerstone for soundtrack fans seeking a deeper dive into beloved and hard-to-find titles.

Following the film’s 2015 release, Debney’s score for Sponge Out of Water quickly became one of his most beloved works. Shifting between pirate rhythms and voice-topped epic comic-book action, Debney conveys the cosmic stakes of SpongeBob and his reluctant nemesis, Plankton, as they attempt to recover the Krabby Patty formula stolen by the nefarious, live-action scalawag Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas). Balancing comic lunacy with moments of sweeping heroism—as Super SpongeBob and friends don their capes—Debney enthusiastically captures the screwball spirit of Bikini Bottom with his wildly inventive score for the character he would revisit a decade later in The Search for Squarepants.
An opportunity Debney embraced, the project allowed him to lean into both the quirks and scale of scoring for such a beloved animated property. In the new liner notes for this deluxe edition, the California-born composer reflects on the score’s eclectic influences: “You know me and pirate movies!… I really wanted to reference what Buddy Baker did for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, because I think of that first. Then I think of Erich Wolfgang Korngold and The Sea Wolf. Then Hans Zimmer’s music comes up for his Caribbean movies. You throw it all into a hat, jumble it up, and then come up with a pirate theme. It was really fun, because Sponge Out of Water was a time when orchestras were working a lot more in Los Angeles, and everyone was primed and ready to do a big adventure score – which this really is.”
As for Timecop, the film marked a pivotal collaboration between Jean-Claude Van Damme and multi-hyphenate filmmaker Peter Hyams. Adapted from the Dark Horse comic, the story follows a time-traveling enforcer working to stop a power-hungry politician while unraveling the mystery of his wife’s murder—helping propel Van Damme to a new level of Hollywood stardom. Those suspenseful and emotional stakes carry through in the hard-hitting, percussively pummeling score composed by Mark Isham, who’d previously scored Van Damme’s Nowhere to Run as well as the evocative chase of The Hitcher.
A fan-favorite soundtrack for decades, Timecop is finally available again — expanded musically and featuring exclusive interviews. In his interview, Isham reflects on his unorthodox approach to the score: “I used very traditional and time-proven devices to make Timecop a really emotional piece of work while satisfying Peter’s strong decision that the other part of the score would be completely unpredictable and unemotional”, also noting that “It had a lot of prepared pianos that were recorded very, how shall we say, aggressively – like slamming piano lids and hitting piano strings. That poor piano! So those percussive sounds have a very organic feeling yet sound a little bit alien at the same time.”
Celebrate both Timecop and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water with these new CD Club and Digital Deluxe Editions.
